Diana McDonald, director of Butler County Senior Services, introduced Virgene Otte as the Volunteer of the Year at the Butler County Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Monday night. McDonald nominated Otte for her contributions as a volunteer since 2013 at the senior center and beyond.
“Virgene is a kind caring person that is always willing to help whenever and wherever possible,” McDonald said.
Otte drives a Busy Wheels van twice a week and fills in on a regular basis for other drivers, McDonald said. Otte also runs errands, is a “huge help” at the monthly brunches and is “always eager to help whenever needed.”
Otte has created blankets that are sold for fundraisers for BCSS. A year ago, she was appointed by the Butler County Board of Supervisors to serve on the Butler County Senior Advisory Board.
“Not only is she willing to go above and beyond her call of duty at the Senior Center, but she is always willing to help others by either taking them out to eat or to other community events on the weekends or just lending an ear when they need to talk,” McDonald said.
Drawing a chuckle from the crowd, McDonald said: “Anybody who knows Virgene knows she’s always willing to give advice whether you like it or not.”
Otte’s contributions have been a big part of the senior center’s success.
“We would definitely be lost without her at the center,” McDonald said.
Otte thanked those who were involved in the award, but she didn’t have a long speech.
“If anybody needs help, I’ll help you. That’s what I like to do,” she said.
