James M. Smith,63, aka, Jim, Gord, Handsome Jim, Flex, died February 13, 2018 in Lincoln. He lived in the communities of Ottawa Kansas and Fairbury and David City, Nebraska.
A celebration of life for Jim will be 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 17 at the 4H Building Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Fairbury. A short program will begin at 1:30 p.m.
Jim was many things to many people. He was free spirited, smart, funny, wild, fast and a nonconformist. He gave style and color to his life by always living on his own terms.
Born June 11, 1954 to Mary and Jim Smith of Fairbury, Jim grew up in the family bakery business, Smithy's Pastry Shoppe, owned and operated by his grandparents, Marion and Clara Smith. He learned bakery skills that he used throughout his life. His family also introduced him to hunting, fishing and taking apart and repairing old cars. Jim graduated from Fairbury High School in 1972 . In his lifetime he enjoyed go carting, sprint racing and demolition derby.
His career path took many different avenues from owning a bakery to mechanic, bakery manager of a large food chain to being a nurse. In his life, Jim, was married to Jane, Maxine and Lisa. Lisa's two young children, Dylan and Kaylie were adopted by Jim.
In 2014 Jim, married his high school sweetheart Jody Johnson. Jim retired from nursing due to his health. He recently had LVAD surgery. In the presence of family and friends, Jim passed on Feb 13, 2018 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, due to other complications.
Jim leaves to mourn: wife, Jody Johnson Smith, David City, son Dylan Smith (Nikki) & grandson Alexander “Lex” James Smith,Gladstone Missouri, and Sister Deb Smith Cole, Lincoln.
