BELLWOOD — Joyce M. Navrkal, 70, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at her home at Bellwood Lakes.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 12, at United Methodist Church in Bellwood.
All memorials may be directed to school bus gas for the Red Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota.
Joyce Marie Navrkal was born Oct. 7, 1946, in Columbus to Joseph and Helen (Henderson) Splichal Sr. She married Gary Navrkal on Nov. 16, 1963. Joyce worked at St. Mary’s Hospital and Dale Electronics. After that, she worked with Gary at L and L Livestock. They moved to Bellwood in 1978 to farm with Adolph, then farmed on their own. She also worked six years for Fontanelle Detasseling, 30 years at Columbus Ag Park horse races, and drove bus for Bellwood and David City for 12 years. Joyce enjoyed raising and riding quarter horses. She also enjoyed science, archaeology and all world history. Her greatest love was her family and friends, and Native American history.
Joyce is survived by her husband Gary; daughter Tammy (Jacob Hoffmann) Tierney of Lincoln; son Tim (Shelly) of Bellwood; granddaughter Kayla Tierney of Lincoln; grandsons David Hayek of Columbus, Joshua Tierney of Escondido, California, Michael (Kelsey) Gansebom of Seward, Brandon Gansebom of Foster and Derrick Gansebom of Bellwood; great-grandchildren Lainey, Cael and Zachary Gansebom; many brothers and sisters; and loyal canine companion Cody.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Helen (Henderson) Splichal Sr., sister Bobbie (Barry) Preston and grandson Joseph Gansebom.
