Ruby Wilken, 100, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, October 20, 2017, at David Place in David City, Nebraska.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Patrick Sparling and Rev. David Palomaki officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m.
Ruby was born January 15, 1917, in rural Platte County, Nebraska, to Fred and Ella (Benthack) Behlen. She, and her identical twin Ruth Jones, graduated from Kramer High School in 1935. Ruby worked as a cashier at Penney’s where she met Wilbert. On August 18, 1940, Ruby was united in marriage to Wilbert Wilken, a marriage that lasted 68 years. Wilbert’s job with the Penney Company took them to many states, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa. In 1986 they returned to Columbus and lived at Wagner’s Lake. They enjoyed spending their winters in southern Texas. Ruby enjoyed golfing and playing Bridge.
Ruby is survived by: Son: Jim Wilken of Emmitsburg, Md.; Daughter: Ruth (Dr. Victor) Thoendel of David City; 10 Grandchildren: Sara (Doug) Theobald of Seward; Dr. David (Tara) Battaglia of College Station, Texas; Becci (Dr. Evan) Neesen of Omaha; Torie Thoendel of David City; Trish (Mike) Heins of Kearney; Carrie (Kurt) Kuhlman of Columbus; Christy Decker of Omaha; Sue (John) King of Des Moines, Iowa; Marcus (Carrie) Thoendel of Bellwood; Dr. Matthew (Dr. Amanda) Thoendel of Rochester, Minn.; 29 Great Grandchildren; Sister: Francis Brakel of Evansville, Ind.
Ruby was preceded in death by: Parents: Fred and Ella Behlen; Husband: Wilbert Wilken; Grandson: Scott Wilken; 1 Great Grandson; Brothers: Gilbert, Walter, Mike, and Adolph Behlen; Sisters: Selma Burns, Norma Tiesing, and Ruth Jones;
