The Aquinas cross country teams brought home first place in the small schools division of the North Bend Central Invitational on Sept. 21. Runners coped with temperatures in the high 80s and a stiff south breeze.

“We say at a meet like this and really with all cross country. Time means nothing, PLACE mean everything," Aquinas coach John Svec said. "Our teams ran very tough and placed very well also”

Amanda Aerts of East Butler and Eli Frasher of Aquinas were in familiar places, at the front of the girls and boys races respectively.

Aerts finished in a time of 21:07.91, a little more than a minute ahead of Aquinas’ Clare Fiala, the runner-up.

Frasher, with a time of 16.59.37, was nearly 90 seconds in front of Joel Moeller of Logan View.

The Monarchs, however, were well represented in the medalists of the boys and girls races.

Clare Fiala, Mary Fiala and Allie Frasher finished second through fourth, and Faith Kozisek and Kate Slama were 12th and 13th to assure the girls team victory. The Tigers were not far behind, with Hallie Zitek and Olivia Bohac at 16th and 17th. Abbie Christensen, 15th, Sydney Christensen 16th, and Madison Spatz 18th, all kept East Butler in the competition.

Aquinas won the girls competition with an average time of 22:49.92. East Butler edged North Bend for second with an average time of 25:44.64.

Aquinas Boys out front

The Aquinas boys team ensured the title with five runners in the top 15.

Luke Frasher placed fifth, Will Eller sixth, Peter Sixco seventh, Hayden Schawang ninth, and Dan Stara 10th.

The Monarchs, with an average time of 1:19.03, were well in front of runners-up Logan View and third place North Bend. East Butler was seventh.

Top finishers for East Butler were Cristian Hofpar, 23rd, and Justin Sousek at 24th. Michael Polivka was 30th; Jared Dvorak 35th, and Gavin Cruce, 37.
