The Aquinas wrestling team brought home three medals from the NSAA Wrestling Championships at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. the
Joseph Reimers (41-0)won his second straight title at 182 pounds. His finals match ended with a 1:19 pin of Ethan Poppe (42-6) of Crofton/Bloomfield. That followed a semifinal major decision over Haydn Deinert (50-6) of Malcolm. The Monarchs scored 65.5 points to place sixth.
Reimers made quick work of his finals opponent.
The top ranked wrestler at 182 pounds in Class C all season, Reimers pinned No. 2 Ethan Poppe in 1 minute, 19 seconds to win his second straight state championship. The junior, who finishes the season 41-0, had a banged up knee coming in and wanted to take the match to the mat and off his feet.
“I was trying to come out firing and I did it,” Reimers said.
He quickly put Poppe on his back. When the ref smacked the mat, he only had one thing going through his mind.
“I did it,” he said. “This is what we’re training for all year. This is what we want so bad. I finally got it. There’s nothing like it.”
Reimers joins other repeat champions to seek a third gold medal as a senior.
“Just keep the progress going,” Reimers said.
Kyle Petree (44-4), a state champ in 2017, ended his career with four straight wins to place third at 160 pounds. He wrestled back into medal contention after losing a quarterfinal match by pin to Chase Becker (48-5) of Southern Valley. Petree pinned two opponents and and won a 1-0 decision over Zachary Borer (48-3) of North Bend Central to get to the third place match, where he pinned Blake Moore (19-6) of Tekamah-Herman in 4:28.
Zach Zitek (38-7) placed fifth at 106 pounds. He won a 6-4 decision over Ryan Zoucha (44-8) of Malcolm. He battled back after giving up a quarterfinal decision 13-7 to Casey Benavides (50-4) of Bridgeport.
