The David City girls basketball team hosted Class C1 No.8 Malcolm on Jan.13. The Scouts struggled to slow down the Clippers offense in a 68-40 loss.

“I think we played hard, but Malcolm plays a different kind of hard,” David City coach Nathan Wall said. “Our man to man did cause problems at times, but they have some things you can’t guard like a 6’2” girl with amazing footwork.”

Chaquoya Givens had the first points of the game to put David City up 2-0. Malcolm's McKenzie Teten’s steal and layup tied the game at 2-2.

The Clippers went on a 12-2 run to build a 14-2 lead.

Givens layup underneath made the score 14-4. On the next possession, Givens made a layup while being fouled. After the made free throw the Scouts trailed 14-7.

Brooklyn Minzel’s layup put the Clippers up 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Malcolm's Teten came out with the first three points of the second quarter. Scout sophomore Macy Svoboda responded with a three to cut the lead to 19-10.

Olivia Couch showed her toughness underneath for a layup to cut the margin to 19-12.Malcolm responded with a jumper by Kelsey Brady. Givens continued to cause problems for the Clippers underneath with a layup to make it 25-16.

“Chaquoya Givens had 22 points and missed very few shots for us, which was positive to see,” Wall said.

Heading into halftime David City trailed 33-21.

Malcolm picked up its full-court pressure in the second half. Chloe Schumacher’s steal and layup extend the Clippers lead to 35-21

Lauren Vandenberg’s mid-range jumper cut the lead to 35-23. Givens scored three on a layup and foul shot, to make it 39-26.

Malcolm went on a 12-5 run to finish the third quarter ahead 51-32.

After Givens hit a mid-range jumper to start the final quarter, Malcolm responded with a 9-0 run. The Clippers defensive intensity and points in transition were too much for the Scouts to overcome.

Givens scored a game-high 22 points. Svoboda, Renee Backstrom, and Oliva Couch each added 4 points.

Teten led Malcolm with 17 points, followed by Schumacher with 14. The Scouts traveled to play Shelby-Rising City(5-9) on Tuesday. They host Yutan on Jan. 23.
