Monarchs excel at Charlie Thorell Invite

SEWARD —  Aquinas got some strong performances Thursday at the Charlie Thorell Invite in Seward.

In a race that mixed all four classes with more than 320 runners, senior Eli Frasher won the boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 32.5 seconds. Frasher took the title by 27 seconds over another Class D runner, Hastings St. Cecilia’s Justin Vrooman.

“Eli Frasher, what a competitor,” Aquinas head coach John Svec said. “Huge meet, big race, clutch performance.”

The Aquinas boys and girls, led by Clare Fiala, were the top schools in the Class C and D division. Fiala was sixth overall with a time of 20:51.97.

Luke Frasher was 36th overall with a time of 18:38.2. Will Eller was 67th in 19:50.1 and Peter Sisco was 73rd in 19:56 to round out the scoring for the Aquinas boys, who finished with 161 team points.

“The boys are improving and a win at a large meet like this just might get them hungry," Svec said.

Mary Fiala, Clare’s sister, also earned a medal at the meet, finishing 16th with a time of 21:28.13.

“Clare had a great meet and Mary really improved,” Svec said.

An injury to the Monarchs’ No. 2 runner didn’t stop them from posting the best score among Class C and D schools with 107 points.

“The other girls really locked in and ran great races,” Svec said. “They are just staying solid and performing well.”

Valeria Whitmore finished 37th in 23:14.08 and Kate Slama was 55th in 24:19.13 as the other scorers for Aquinas.
