The David City wrestling team opened the season with a second place finish in the York Invitational Wrestling Meet on Saturday in York.
David City coach Tahner Thiem said his team had a good first showing of the season.
“I am very happy with the way this team competed this weekend,” Thiem said. “I honestly thought that we wrestled every match to win this weekend. That seems like it should be a given, but sometimes guys go out to wrestle the returning wrestlers with credentials close. I was proud of how aggressive our guys looked from every position.”
He summarized the highlights:
113- Seth won the tournament in a pretty dominating fashion. I think 113 is a great weight class for him this year and he has been laser focused.
120- Zack Barlean placed first in his first tournament as a varsity wrestler. Last year he was surrounded by state medalists and got better everyday in our room. I could see him becoming a household name this season. Zack put in a ton of work this summer.
126- Noah Styskal also put in a ton of work in the offseason. Noah looked great on his feet and came out aggressive in every match.
132- Jacson Valentine was a surprise to a lot of other coaches but not to our coaching staff. Jacson wrestled up two weight classes last season and battled every match. This year he is in a weight class where he should be competing and is doing a phenominal job everyday in practice. Jacson searches out the best partners he can every day.
138- Justin White was voted outstanding wrestler of the tournament by the coaches in attendance. Justin pinned his way through this bracket which was full of returning state qualifiers.
145- Dylan Vodicka also made a great name for himself this weekend. In pool play he gave returning state runner-up Scott Fulsos everything he had. I was proud of the way Dylan wrestled and I think people are going to see great things from him in the future.
220- Matt Eilers also had an impressive tournament this weekend. Matt pinned everyone he wrestled but returning state medalist Jesus Meganda from Schuyler.
