The David City boys basketball team got back to its brand of basketball and into the win column Jan. 27 against Thayer Central. The Scouts stole their way into multiple fast breaks in a 66-43 victory.
“We have to cause turnovers, especially when a team has a player like number 32 for Thayer Central who is a big solid body,” David City coach Cole Carraher said. “We really emphasize forcing the turnovers before the ball has an opportunity to be entered into the paint.”
Will Danielson sparked David City’s offense early on. The Junior dropped in 12 points to give the Scouts an 18-6 lead.
The Titans opened the second quarter with a three by Max Madsen.
David City answered with a rebound and layup by Danielson. Colin Vandenberg’s three brought the lead back out to 12 points at 23-11. Later in the quarter, Josh Seibert found his way into the scoring column with a driving jumper. Vandenberg fought down low for a layup to make it 29-18.
At halftime, the Scouts led 31-20.
The Titans found their rhythm early in the third quarter with shots underneath. Keith Hergott scored 8 points in three minutes to help cut David City’s lead to 34-30.
The Scouts had pushed their advantage back out to 10 points when Taylor Koos and Max Madsen hit back to back threes for Thayer Central.
Entering the fourth quarter the Titans had the momentum.
David City answered the challenge with baskets by Danielson and Salazar. Danielson’s layup and free throw helped stretch the Scout lead to double digits at 48-37.
David City stepped up the pressure for steals to set up the fast break offense.
The Scouts outscored the Titans 25-6 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Danielson scored a game-high 25 points. Josh Seibert was the Scouts second leading scorer with 16 points.
Hergott led the Titans with 12 points, followed by Madsen with 11 points.
