The East Butler boys basketball team finished third in the A Division after dispatching the host team in the Weeping Water Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29.

Jaden Rhynald’s seven three pointers, a Tiger school record for a game, were enough to counter the Jets’ offense, which struggled the entire game. The win came after the Tigers' tough loss to Sterling in the opening round.

“It was much better job from start to finish, both offensively and on defense,” East Butler coach Greg Jahde said. “Trevor (Havlovic) provided a great presence inside and Jaden was hot from the perimeter.”

The Tigers led 22-11 at halftime, and a 13-8 third quarter put the game out of reach. Havlovic shot the only free throws for the Tigers, going 3-4.

Rhynalds led the scoring with 25 points and Havlovic added 15.

Tigers fall in OT to Sterling

Holding a lead with 2:30 left in the game, the Tigers were unable to finish off the Sterling Jets in the opening round. The Jets won 61-55 in overtime after tying the game with four seconds left in regulation.

“This was a tough loss,” Jahde said. “We were up 8 points with 2:30 to play. That’s when Trevor (Havlovic) fouled out and things fell apart.”

“We turned over too many times against their press, missed free throws, and “fouled” too much, leaving time on the clock for them to tie it with four seconds left,” Jahde said “Then Jaden (Rhynalds) fouled out with two minutes left in overtime in a 2-point game. From that point it just got away from us.

“Although the reffing seemed a little one sided, we ultimately lost by not doing what we needed to do at the end of regulation."

Rhynalds led the Tigers with 22 points, going 7-8 at the free throw line, and Camden Robley added 12. The Tigers were 13-22 in free throws, while the Jets were 23-33.
