The East Butler wrestling team, already unable to fill all the weight classes, had a few extra challenges to start the season.
Despite those setbacks, Tigers coach Doug Glasshoff saw progress. The Tigers were 0-2 as a team at the triangular at North Bend against the Raymond Central Mustangs.
“We were a little short handed to start the season after a short preseason as well,” Glasshoff said. “We are not quite at the weights we want to be yet, but that is to be expected after only having six practices before our first competition. We did a good job of competing in spite of these conditions, even though the score board did not show it. We went 7-2 in matches that were wrestled. This is a good measuring stick of what we need to work on and get better at.”

Spatz, Rezac get gold at Lakeview
The Tigers competed Friday at the Lakeview Invite and came home with two gold medals.
“Ryley Spatz (145) and Brandon Rezac (220) were champs today and undefeated last night, so going undefeated the first week is a good start to the season,” Glasshoff said. “With the football championship, we got a late start with practice and are not where we need to be with our conditioning. I felt like we competed well and just need to continue to push each other in practice and get ready for the Osceola invite next weekend.”
Spatz pinned Jacob Ray of North Bend in 5 minutes to win the first place match. Spatz picked up three pins – Emmitt Broberg, Scotus, 0:31; Oliver Jimenez, Lakeview, 0:30; and Mason Schleis, Shelby-Rising City, 5:23.
Rezac won the title with a technical fall, 18-2 over Mike Leatherdale of Wayne. He also picked up two pins – Lakeview’s Austin Rollman in 3:54 and Twin River’s Tucker Alexander in 2:00.
Shelby-Rising City was 10th with 25 points. Mason Schleis was the Huskies’ top wrestler, going 3-2 at 145 pounds to place fourth.
East Butler will compete in the Osceola Invite on Saturday, and then the Wahoo Invite on Dec. 16.
