KEARNEY — Eli Frasher did not have time to think about being disqualified a year ago nearly 600 meters from the finish of the the Class D state cross country meet.
The Aquinas senior moved past that point with his eyes on the finish line Friday, capturing his second individual title with a time 16 minutes, 33.38 seconds at Kearney Country Club.
“It's big that I could come back and be on top this year and revenge last year's loss,” Frasher said. “All year you kind of train with that in the back of your mind and then come here and make it happen when the odds are against you on a windy day. It's pretty special and icing on the cake.”
He was disqualified last year after he was aided on the course after falling down.
Frasher also won the Class D state meet in 2015 after a 14th-place finish in 2014, and credits his push to third-place finisher Justin Vrooman of Hastings St. Cecilia.
“(Vrooman) is such a great competitor,” Frasher said. “He brings the best of out of me and we have gone back-and-forth since freshman year.
“To come away with it, I mean, he could have easily beat me today. It just depends on the day.”
This day was special for the Monarch runner. His brother, Aquinas freshman Luke Frasher, competed in his first state meet after the Monarchs qualified as a team. In the girls race, the Frasher family added a second medalist when freshman sister Alexandria finished 10th.
“That's huge,” Eli Frasher said. “We were talking and thinking we were one of the few if not the only family to send three state runners in a cross country meet in the same year. That was pretty special.”
