The Shelby-Rising City girls basketball team started the season with a victory Friday against Crossroads Conference foe Cross County, 53-45. The Huskies faced a tougher test Saturday, falling to Aquinas 53-42 at home.

“I like our progress,” said S-RC coach Turner Trufholz. “We have some experience and a lot of players that don't have much experience. We play very hard and our defense continues to improve. We need to continue to grow on the offensive end and take care of the ball. The Cross County game was a great win for us and we played well for a half against Aquinas. We have a long way to go.”

Against Cross County, the Huskies pulled ahead with a 14-5 second quarter, led by Sydnie Adams and Cassie Caraway. Adams led with 18 points and six rebounds.

The Cougars shot 33 percent from the floor, and only sank three of their 14 three-point attempts. The Huskies depended on their inside game, attempting only three shots from beyond the arch.

Aquinas 53, S-RC 32

The Huskies were able to hang around with the Aquinas Monarchs for two quarters on Saturday, but that was it, as the Huskies fell 53-32 on their home court.

Senior Sydnie Adams tried to keep her team in the game, going 8-9 for 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Freshman Reece Ingalls grabbed eight off the board.

Adams’ production wasn’t enough to counter the Aquinas second half attack, when the Monarchs pulled away with a 36-14 barrage.

S-RC faces Giltner (2-0) at home on Friday. Aquinas hosted Howells-Dodge (1-1) on Tuesday and hosts Archbishop Bergan (2-0) on Saturday. On Tuesday, Dec. 12 the Monarchs host Bishop-Neumann (0-2).
