The Aquinas girls basketball team went toe to toe with Class D2 No.2 Humphrey St. Francis Feb.6 in David City. The Monarchs gave the Flyers everything they could handle in a 68-62 defeat.
“Offensively we created some good looks and didn't get some shots to fall but we know we can create those opportunities in our next game,” Aquinas coach Vanessa Munter said. “We know that our defense helps us create the up-tempo play that we like to establish because our depth enables us to wear teams down.”
St. Francis jumped in front with inside baskets from Logan Wemhoff. Allison Weidner’s steal and layup made it 9-5.
Vanessa Bohuslavsky hit a three-pointer for Aquinas to cut the lead to 14-12.
The Flyers' Tara Foltz answered with a three-pointer, and Wemhoff’s basket inside made it 19-12.
The Monarchs closed the gap to a basket several times, but St. Francis always had an answer.
At halftime, Aquinas were down 40-33.
The Flyers continued to punish the Monarchs, with the one-two punch of Wemhoff and Weidner. Halfway through the third quarter St. Francis led 48-37.
Aquinas turned it around with back to back layups by Vanessa Bohuslavsky and Breanna Stouffer.
At the end of the quarter, Stouffer was fouled on a three-pointer. After she sank all three free-throws the Monarchs trailed 48-45. St. Francis asserted its dominance, leading by seven-point through the final period.
Aquinas' final rally attempt fell short. The Monarchs were led by Stouffer with 21 points, followed by Jadyn Krafka with 13 points. Weidner, a freshman scored a game-high 23 points for the Flyers and Wemhoff added 21 points underneath.
