The Aquinas softball team won’t know how it might have placed in the District C-3 Softball Tournament if play had continued in double elimination fashion.
After defeating Wymore Southern and losing to Malcolm, the Monarchs were in the losers bracket, leading Milford 1-0 when the game was called due to wet field conditions.
Because loser’s bracket games were not completed by the end of the tournament’s first day, the four remaining teams were eliminated. Originally set for Valparaiso, last week’s rainfall caused the tournament to move to Fairbury, and the rain created problems there too.
“The Monarchs competed hard,” said Aquinas coach Paul Gahan, “They brought a lot of energy and played the best softball that I saw them play all season.”
The Monarchs defeated the Southern Raiders 8-3 in the opening game. Sierra Meysenburg went 3-4 at the plate with a home run and double to spark the offense.
Five other Monarchs produced hits, and Kelsey Baer limited the damage from the circle, giving up a walk and two hit batters.
Malcolm, which went on to play Fairbury in the finals, defeated the Monarchs 10-2. The Clippers rolled up 11 hits on the way to the victory.
The loss ended the Monarchs’ season at 16-13.
Gahan was pleased with some runners-up finishes at Guardian Angels and David City tournaments, and the title at Central City’s tournament.
“It’s certainly nice to have more wins than losses, but my expectations were higher than just a winning record. We played good softball at times this season. Other times we did not seem ready to compete. Consequently our effort was inconsistent throughout the season. Overall, I consider the season to be successful.
