The Shelby-Rising City boys basketball team relied on its defense to slow down Cross County and get a road win Dec. 1 in its season opener.
The Huskies held the Cougars to just 32 percent shooting from the field in the 52-47 victory.
Huskies coach Grant Gable was pleased with the opener.
“We did an excellent job of getting to the line tonight and this was a big win,” he said. “I thought our defense did a great job of getting some big stops towards the end. This could have gone either way, and fortunate for us we were able to ice the game at the line.”
It was a tight game throughout as S-RC held a 26-24 advantage at halftime, outscoring Cross County 13-12 in each of the first two quarters.
The Huskies clung to a 36-35 lead heading to the final quarter, where they outscored the Cougars 16-12.
S-RC's Jett Pinneo hit 5 of 8 shots and all eight free-throw attempts on his way to a game-high 19 points. Max Hoatson added 14 points and six rebounds and Austin Coffin also had 14 points.
Grant Hollinger scored 12 points to lead Cross County. Colton Beebe had 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists, but shot just 3 of 19 from the field.
