A slow start doomed the David City boys basketball team against Sutton in the first round of the David City Holiday Tournament Dec.29. The Mustangs jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back in a 63-48 victory.
Sutton brought an experienced team with only one player on the roster who was shorter than 6-foot tall.
Luis Salazar got things going for David City with a jump shot up top. Colin Vandenberg’s drive and layup cut the deficit to 9-4.
Salazar added a three-pointer and Josh Seibert made a baseline jumper to pull the Scouts within one at 10-9.
Sutton led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Garret Nuss’s reverse layup stretched the Mustangs lead back out to two possessions. Samuel Nuss added a three pointer to make the score 19-11. Hunter Behrens basket with 6:40 cut the lead back to 19-13.
Sutton continued to score with layups in transition. At halftime, the Mustangs led 31-21.
Seth George established his presence, with three baskets on Suttons first four possessions. Casey Van Kirk’s layup pushed the Mustang lead to 42-25.
Will Danielson went to the line and made one of two free throws. Salazar’s three pointer cut the lead to 42-29. George’s six straight points to end the quarter, put Sutton up 50-37.
The Mustangs and Scouts went back and forth in the fourth quarter but David City could not string together enough stops to get the victory.
Luis Salazar led David City with 18 points. Nick Ruth was the only other Scout in double figures with 13 points.
Sutton’s George led all scorers with 23 points. Garret Nuss and Van Kirk each had 9 points.
David City next game is Jan.5 at Twin River.

Scouts fall to Falcons
David City had plenty of offense in Saturday's game against Douglas County West, but the Scouts couldn't slow down the Falcons on the other end.
Will Danielson scored 21 points and Luis Salazar added 16 for David City, which fell 72-61 in the consolation game of the David City Holiday Tournament.
The Scouts, who also got 10 points from Josh Seibert, led 19-17 after the first quarter before DC West jumped in front. David City trailed 35-30 at halftime and 54-49 after three quarters.
Carson Koubicek and Spencer Hayes scored 15 points apiece for DC West (5-5) and Max Johnson finished with 13.
The Scouts (2-6), hope to get back in the win column at Twin River on Friday.
