The David City and East Butler girls basketball teams faced off in a county rivalry Dec.21 in David City. The Scouts used tough defense and transition offense to beat the Tigers 49-39.
“Once we got into the passing lanes and started taking away their face cuts within their offense, we started getting some stops, which allowed us to get out and run,” David City coach Nathan Wall said. “When we are in transition, we are at our best and we ran the floor well tonight.”
East Butler coach Kevin Behne said the Scouts’ inside game was the biggest challenge.
“The Scouts won the battle of the boards 32-23,” Behne said. “We struggled and had only five offensive boards for the night. The Scouts have an experienced team and they took control in the second quarter. We’ve avoided that ‘bad’ quarter in the last couple of games but tonight had that 'dry spell' in the second and got behind by 10. We had some unforced turnovers that hurt any chance of a comeback.”
The Tigers led 5-0 after Madison Helman hit a three pointer and Amanda Aerts converted two free throws to start the game.
David City answered with Renee Backstrom’s three-pointer, followed by Chaquoya Givens’ layup and free throw to give the Scouts the lead at 6-5.
David City outscored the Tigers 14-5 in the second quarter to grab a 24-14 lead. The Scouts made it tough for the Tigers to get into the lane. East Butler cut into David City’s lead to begin the second half. After a three-pointer and a pair of layups by Helman and Aerts, the Tigers trailed 35-31.
Jessica Knoppe’s three-pointer at the buzzer made it 38-31 at the end of the third quarter, and Olivia Couch hit two baskets to start the fourth. The Scouts turned to their defense and held East Butler to 8 fourth-quarter points.
Scout seniors led the team in scoring. Givens had a game-high 17 points and 5 rebounds. Backstrom added 11 points, going 3-3 on three-pointers.
Madison Helman led the Tigers with 16 points. Amanda Aerts had 14 points, including 6-6 from the free throw line.
David City plays Sutton (0-6) Dec.29 in the first round of the David City Holiday Tournament.
East Butler plays Cedar Bluffs (3-5) Dec.28 in the first round of the Weeping Water Holiday Tournament.
