The David City boys basketball team narrowly won three of the four quarters to secure a 61-51 victory over Shelby-Rising City on Jan. 16 at Shelby.
“I thought we played one of our best offensive games of the year, and were very balanced scoring inside and out over the course of the game,” said David City coach Cole Caraher. “Will Danielson did a great job inside for us at both ends of the floor, and Josh Seibert hit some key shots from outside to allow us to keep our lead throughout the second half.”
“We also got a huge contribution from our bench in the first half to help us get some separation, as Hunter Behrns, Riley Kirby and Brock Tiemeyer all came off the bench to hit a three in those first two periods. I thought we played with a lot of composure in holding on to our lead down the stretch, and made some big free throws in the fourth quarter.”
S-RC coach Grant Gabel said his team’s rebounding was lacking. One reason may have been Max Hoatson sitting on the bench with a foot in a walking boot.
“Both teams shot the ball very well tonight,” Gabel said. “The main difference was the rebounds. They had second chance points and we didn’t. That to go along with them outshooting us for threes made a huge difference in the outcome. In the end they made their free throws in the fourth and we couldn’t overcome that.”
David City junior Will Danielson led all scorers with 19 points, while Nick Ruth and Josh Seibert each added 10. In the fourth quarter, as the Huskies tried to tighten the game, senior Colin Vandenberg scored on two consecutive steals to keep the Scouts ahead.
The Huskies were led by Jett Pinneo’s 18 points, and Austin Coffin added 14.
The Scouts improved their free throw shooting, with Ruth going 4-4, Seibert 3-6 and Luis Salazar 2-2.
