David City girls basketball coach Nathan Wall recorded his 100th career victory against Sutton in the first round of the David City Holiday Tournament Dec. 29.
The Scouts fought back from a first-quarter deficit to defeat the Fillies 39-33. Freshman Lauren Vandenberg led the Scouts with 15 points, including crucial buckets to seal the win in the fourth.
The win was another example of the team’s growth, Wall said.
“We surpassed the win total from last year, and it’s the first time we have beat a team in our conference in close to two years,” he said.
The Scouts were determined to make it to the finals.
“We really dug our heels into the court, and we just refused to let Sutton beat us to the hoop,” Wall said. “Sutton got very few offensive rebounds which allowed us to run and really control the tempo of the game.”
After the Scouts jumped ahead, Sutton cut the lead to 12-9 with a layup by Kylie Baumert. Alyssa Schurman’s three at the buzzer gave Sutton the 15-14 lead after the first quarter.
Chaquoya Givens’ three points off free-throws tied the game at 17-17. David City regained the lead on a putback by Renee Backstrom, and led 24-18 at halftime.
Schuman came out with a layup to begin the second half. Back-to back-buckets by Lacey Freking and Schuman cut the deficit to two points.
In the last two minutes, David City’s Givens and Sutton’s Kylie Baumert traded baskets. At the end of the third quarter, David City clung to a 30-28 lead.
Vandenberg came out on fire in the fourth quarter. She made a three-pointer and layup in a minute and a half to put the Scouts up 35-28.
David City leaned on its defense the rest of the way.
Vandenberg led the Scouts with a game-high 15 points. Senior Givens added 9 points.
The Fillies leading scorer was Alyssa Schurman with 12 points. Kylie Baumert had 8 points.
100 is special
Wall said that hitting the century mark was special. The milestone came at his third coaching assignment.
“It really made me sit back and reflect on the trip it’s been so far in my career, and all the people who have helped me get to where I am at,” he said. “I definitely did get a little emotional when I saw all are fans waving the 100 wins signs.”
