The David City-East Butler-Shelby-Rising City softball team found success at the start of the Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament on Saturday before running into a couple of hard hitting teams.
The Scouts defeated Milford 4-2 in the first game of the tournament hosted by Fillmore Central in Geneva. Fairbury (19-6) won the tournament with a 7-3 defeat of Fillmore Central-Exeter-Milligan(13-9).
The game was a tight contest through five innings. The Scouts scored a run in the second and kept the Eagles off the board until two runs came across in the fourth inning.
The Scouts answered in the fifth, then got the winning run and an extra cushion with two sixth inning runs.
Aspyn Harrison and the defense kept the Scouts in the game until the bats warmed up.
“Aspyn pitched a great game an our defense cme up with some huge plays in the seventh to seal the victory,” said Scouts coach Greg Jahde.
Debbie white and Sophie Mefford each had two hits.
Fairbury 11, Scouts 1
In the semi final game against Fairbury, the Scouts needed a near perfect game and got nowhere close to one.
“The game was a catastrophe from the get-go,” Jahde said. “After a short break between games it looked like we left our gloves on the bus.”
The team committed seven errors that accounted for several of the Jeffs’ runs, Jahde said. The Scouts’ struggles were at the plate two, where they mustered only a couple of hits. Emily Neujahr doubled to make a dent in the 9-0 lead of the fourth inning, and Jordan Roberts brought Neujahr in with a single.
The Jeffs finished the game early with two fourth-inning hits.
Centennial 12 Scouts 0
Centennial (14-11) defeated the Scouts 12-0 to place third.
“We had the same troubles as our game against Fairbury,” Jahde said. “We didn’t play good defense or hit the ball well. Aspyn struggled with her control as well, walking three.”
Neujahr had the team’s lone hit. With the Broncos up 10-0 after one, they finished the game in the third inning with two more runs.
“We just need to regroup now and get a few reps Monday to get ready for districts,” He said.
Soggy fields led to the cancellation of the Scouts final regular season games on Monday.
The Scouts(13-12) travel to Wisner on Thursday for the District B-4 Tournament. The Scouts face Schuyler in the first game at 10 a.m.
