The David City boys basketball team closed out the regular season with a victory Feb.16 against Clarkson-Leigh at David City. The Scouts fought from behind in the final seconds, then fought through two overtimes to top the Patriots 52-48.
“I was proud of how our guys just hung in there and kept getting stops late in the game, and we hit a couple big time shots in the last couple minutes of regulation to get us to overtime, David City coach Cole Carraher said. “We didn't play well at all offensively for the first 3 quarters, so to have the composure and confidence that we could overcome that and get the job done really shows how we've grown throughout the year.”
Early on Clarkson-Leigh jumped out to the early lead behind a driving bucket by Jacob Gall and a rebound and put back by Daniel Beller.
Riley Kirby’s jump shot and a three-pointer by Nick Ruth cut the deficit for David City to one at 10-9.
The Patriots continued to dominate the offensive board, grabbing second-chance opportunities. Haden Held’s rebound and layup put Clarkson-Leigh back out in front 11-10.
Trailing 18-13 in the second quarter, the Scouts got back-to-back buckets from Luis Salazar. At halftime, David City trailed 22-20.
Beller followed up his good first half performance with two straight layups. Anthony Bruhn’s steal and layup put the Patriots up 30-23.
Clarkson-Leigh held onto a double-digit lead, until the two-minute mark in the fourth quarter. At that point, the Scouts went on a 9-4 run to close out regulation.
Luis Salazar’s three inside of 20 seconds tied the game.
In the first overtime, Danielson and Beller traded baskets on consecutive possessions. Both defenses, limited the scoring and after the first overtime the score was knotted at 44-all.
Josh Seibert came up big for the Scouts in the second overtime. The sophomore recorded his only two baskets of the game to give David City a 48-46 edge.
Colin Vandenberg’s jump shot from just inside the free throw line closed out the victory for David City. The Scouts were led by Danielson with 19 points. Salazar was the only other player for David City in double figures with 10 points.
Bellar had a game-high 24 points for the Patriots down low, followed by Tommy McEvoy with 7 points.
