The David City wrestling team brought home its seventh straight Southern Nebraska Conference title from the meet on Feb. 2 in Fairbury.
David City scored 177 points, cruising past runner-up Fairbury with 123. Centennial was third with 117 points.
“If we wrestle this hard at districts, we’ll be fine,” David City coach Tahner Thiem said. “I thought we came out really aggressive.”
The Scout wrestlers concentrate on getting the most bonus points possible, the coach said.
“If you are up 7-0, you need to get another takedown, for example,” to get a major decision, Thiem said. “By working to score more for the team, they help themselves.”
Thiem said that Melvin Hernandez, who recovered from a knee injury before hitting the mat in early January, will be ready for Districts. At 17-0, Hernandez will aim for another state title at 145 pounds.
“We held him out of matches until we thought he was ready,” Thiem said.
The senior, looking for another state title, earned gold with a 15-1 major decision over Centennial’s Gavin Avery (39-10).
Seth Styskal (29-1) defeated Rodney McDonald of South Central in his third pin of the day with 45 seconds left in the match.
At 138, Justin White was tested, winning gold in a 9-8 decision over Logan Slater (37-9) of Fairbury.
Matthew Eilers, 220, rounded out champions for the Scouts. He defeated Centennial’s Kalten Bauers in a 10-1 major decision.
Jackson Valentine (32-10) was pinned by Sam Copley of Milford in the 132 pound title match.
Dylan Vodicka lost a 3-2 decision to Cooper Bates(39-0) of Wilber-Clatonia in the 152 pound finals.
Placing third was Clayton Harris at 120,
Placing fourth were Justin Escamilla at 170, Wayne Moore at 195.
"The guys really came out and wrestled well," Thiem said. "This is the right time of the year to be wrestling well. I think we were way more aggressive and more confident than the other teams that were there."
The Scouts compete in the District C-1 meet at Malcolm on Friday and Saturday.
