The Scouts scored and scored often in two games, and then the scoring came to a halt in the championship game at the District B-4 Softball Tournament.

Stormy weather much of the weekend caused the David City-East Butler-Shelby Rising City softball team a lot of uncertainty as game times and locations had to be decided. Across the board, many sports events were delayed.

But once the Scouts hit the field, it was time to focus.

The Scouts lost 8-0 to Wayne (27-3) in the championship game on Monday at Wisner River Park in Wisner. Despite the loss, it was a big moment for Scout softball and three schools get to celebrate. The team finished the season 15-13, the first winning season since 2004 and it was the team’s first appearance in a district final.

The Scouts nearly kept the Blue Devils off the board until the fifth inning. But instead, the flood gates opened in the fourth with six runs.

“We were one strike from getting out of the fourth without giving up a run,” Scouts coach Greg Jahde said. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”

David City was going to need some extraordinary hitting to top Wayne, no matter how many hits they prevented.

“Not much to say other than their pitcher was dominant over us for the second time facing her,” Jahde said. “We just didn’t make enough contact, striking out 10 times.”

After blanking Schuyler 15-0 at Bradshaw Park in Columbus, where the game was moved due to wet conditions in Wisner, the Scouts didn’t get distracted facing O’Neill in the semi finals. The Scouts and Eagles played Monday morning.

“Really we just took advantage of 12 walks and came up with big hits. Aspyn did a great job in the circle and worked out of two jams in the first and fourth to pick up the win,” Jahde said.

The Scouts were confidant in the opener against Schuyler, ending the game in three innings.

“After sitting around waiting for a few days to play, our girls came out and responded the way I was hoping they would. Emily opened the game with a three-run homer,” Jahde said.

Emily Neujahr finished with six RBI.

Wayne defeated Wisner Pilger 8-0 to reach the finals. The Blue Devils were expected to be seeded fourth in the Class B State Tournament which opens Wednesday in Hastings.
