The David City wrestling team wasn’t at full speed but still picked up the first-place trophy at the Stanton Invitational on Saturday in Stanton.

The Scouts scored 285 points to outpace Battle Creek’s 232. Oakland-Craig was third with 158.

“I was very proud of the way our guys wrestled at Stanton,” said David City coach Tahner Thiem. “We were without two of our biggest point scorers - Seth Styskal and Melvin Hernandez - and still managed to beat No. 2 ranked Battle Creek by a decent margin. We had a lot of younger guys step up in our lineup in a huge way.”

Noah Styskal picked up gold at 126 pounds. He recorded two pins on his way to a forfeit from Owen Lade of Battle Creek.

Justin White, 138 pounds, earned a major decision (17-5)over Jefferson McNeill of Oakland-Craig, after pinning two other opponents, each in under two minutes.

Matt Eilers put together three pins, the last over Julio Sanchez of Wakefield-Allen in 3:10.

Dylan Vodicka placed second at 145 pounds. He won by pin and decision before losing in the title match, 11-3, to Ty Heimes of Battle Creek.
