After falling to the host team at the Weeping Water Holiday Tournament, the East Butler girls basketball team had a battle with Sterling in the consolation game of the A Division on Saturday.

Both teams started slow as the game was tied 13 – 13 at half. The Jets built a five-point lead in the third quarter and expanded it to seven with under two minutes to go in the game. The Tigers came back in the fourth quarter with three pointers by Amanda Aerts, Abby Pierce and Anna Rigatuso.

The Tigers were forced to foul and the Jets’ Malayna Wingert was 7 of 8 from the line in the fourth quarter Winger hit two free throws with 7.7 seconds left to give Sterling the three-point margin of victory.

Wingert led the Jets with 15 points and Carly Wenzel added 12. The Jets shot 36 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line.

“It’s always tough to lose a close game, but the girls played a much improved overall game than the previous day,” East Butler coach Kevin Behne said. “Turnovers were kept to a minimum with only 11 and we did a much better job on the boards with 27 total rebounds.”

The game was decided at the free throw line with Sterling hitting 13 of 20 and East Butler hitting 9 of 13. “Sterling is a much better team than their overall record shows; four of their losses are to pre-season ranked teams,” Behne said.

East Butler was led in scoring by Amanda Aerts with 13 points and Anna Rigatuso with 12 points. Rigatuso also led the Tigers in rebounding with 11. Madison Helman led the team with three assists.
