The Aquinas wrestling team edged Battle Creek to win the District C-2 title at Centennial High School in Utica on Saturday.
The Monarchs, sending 11 wrestlers to the NSAA State Wrestling Championships in Omaha, scored 222 points while the Braves scored 215.5. Wilber Clatonia was third at 155.5.
“We had a excellent weekend of wrestling,” Aquinas coach Roy Emery said. “It took a true team effort for us to win the district championship over a very tough Battle Creek squad. We also earned the top seed in the State Dual Championship in two weeks. We could not have done either of those without each and every one of our wrestlers. All 14 of our wrestlers scored at districts and we needed all of those points. We qualified 11 wrestlers and the three that did not qualify all advanced to the heartbreak round coming up just one match away.”
Highlighting particular performances was tough, there were so many great matches, Emory said.
Kyle Petree, Joseph Reimers, and Zack Zitek all had very good performances in winning individual championships. "Zack has been getting better all season and is wrestlers his best at the right time of year," Emory said. "Kyle and Joseph both earned bonus points in each of their matches."
In his first match of the tournament, Joseph broke the team's season takedown record which was a goal of his this season. Anthony Buresh defeated the top seed in the semifinals on way to a second place finish.
"The surprise of the tournament may have been Owen Schramm," Emory said. "Going into the district tournament Owen had only won four varsity matches all year including two from last week. He was able to score two upsets on Saturday both by pin to qualify for the state tournament."
Lance Dybdal also scored a bit of an upset defeating a wrestler that had beaten him 12-6 earlier in the season to reach the semifinals and set himself up to qualify for state.
At 106 pounds, Zach Zitek (34-5) won a 9-3decision over Mitch Albrecht (33-12) of Raymond Central. He reached the finals with two second-period pins.
At 160, Kyle Petree (39-3) won gold at 160 pounds with three pins, the last in just under a minute against Christian Eacker (25-18) of St. Paul.
