The East Butler boys basketball team used hot three-point shooting to defeat David City Dec. 21 in David City. The Tigers hit 6 from the outside to pull away from the Scouts 49-37.
“This was probably the most complete team effort we have had all year,” said East Butler coach Greg Jahde. “Although we were very careless with the ball at times and didn’t rebound well, we still worked well as a team. We had 13 assists on 19 buckets. If you looked at the stats, we had a different leader in all categories that shows how well this team works together.”
David City struggled offensively and went cold from the free-throw line.
“Offensively we have just been in a funk these past couple games,” David City coach Cole Carraher said. “The free-throw line has been our biggest struggle through these first six games, and tonight it was at an all-time low (3-15).”
East Butler came out firing. Taylor Jirovsky and Jaden Rhynalds each knocked down a three-pointer, to give the Tigers a 14-4 edge.
Nick Ruth added a layup for the Scouts to make it 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
East Butler opened a double digit lead with a layup by Trevor Havlovic and a three-pointer by Camden Robley.
After a layup by Jirovsky, the Tigers led 33-21 at halftime.
David City rallied to start the second half. Three consecutive baskets by Josh Seibert, Luis Salazar, and Colin Vandenberg cut the lead to 35-27.
East Butler responded with three pointers by Jirovsky and Rhynalds to put the Tigers back out in front 41-27.
“DC did some things defensively that we hadn’t seen yet this year such as going to a 1-3 chaser against Jaden,” Jahde said. “We also kept our composure during a few of their runs.”
The Scouts continued to fight down the stretch, but the Tiger lead was too much to overcome in the end. Rhynalds led the Tigers with 17 points in the game. Seniors Havlovic and Jirovsky each had 10 points.
David City’s Josh Seibert led all scorers in the game with 18 points. Luis Salazar added 7 points for the Scouts.
