COLUMBUS — Aquinas senior Eli Frasher was well clear of the competition Sept. 14 at the Scotus Invite, even in tough conditions.

With the temperature around 90 and the wind blowing at Lutjelusche Course, Frasher won the boys 5,000-meter race in 16 minutes, 43 seconds, nearly 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Aidan Wheelock of Minden, who won the Class C state title in 2016.

The Lakeview boys' pack mentality got them the team title with 50 points, edging Wahoo by one point.

Boone Central/Newman Grove’s talented freshmen led the Cardinals to the team title on the girls side as Sam Weeder and Jordan Stopak finished first and second, respectively, with times of 20:50 and 21:08.

A third freshman, Autumn Simmons, finished 11th in 22:48 for the Cardinals and Katie Goodwater was the fourth BC/NG runner in the top 15, taking 14th in 22:59.

The four medalists gave the Cardinals the team title with 27 points.

Scotus Central Catholic’s depth continues to be tested as Brea Lassek still isn’t competing and Olivia Fehringer, the Shamrocks’ best runner this season, was injured during the race and took almost 35 minutes to finish.

Scotus still managed a runner-up finish and two medalists. Kelsey Faust led the Shamrocks with a sixth-place finish in 22:15 and Liza Zaruba was eighth in 22:25. Grace Odbert came in 16th in 23:24 and Emily Ferguson was 25th in 24:14 as the other scorers for the Shamrocks.

Between Faust and Zaruba was Humphrey St. Francis' top runner, Ashley Ternus, who finished in 22:21.

Lakeview’s Ali Loseke crossed in 10th with a time of 22:42. The Vikings were ninth in the team competition with 142 points. Makenna Frenzen was 27th in 24:19, Mikki Nelson was 61st in 26:56 and Marina Jimenez was 63rd in 27:36.

Aquinas was third in the girls race and got top-10 finishes from Clare Fiala (fourth in 21:50) and Mary Fiala (ninth in 22:27).

Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family’s Daisy Korus medaled for the Bulldogs, coming in 12th.

St. Edward’s top runner was Emma Ketelsen, who finished 80th in 33:17.

The Lakeview boys put four runners in the top 20 to come away with the team title. Landon Vogt led the way in seventh with a time of 18:15 and Luis Neave finished 10th in 18:22. Jacob Kapels was 16th and Cody Schaad was 17th in 18:56 and 19:02, respectively.

Behind Frasher, three freshmen helped Aquinas to a fourth-place finish with 70 points. Luke Frasher was 14th in 18:42, Will Eller was 26th in 19:37 and Peter Cisco was 29th in 19:48.

Scotus was fifth with 78 points. Elliott Thomazin led the way in fourth place with a time of 17:33. Freshman Michael Gasper finished 11th in 18:25. Carter Thorson was 28th in 19:44 and Lucas Schaecher was 35th in 20:08.

Yet another freshman for Boone Central/Newman Grove had a good performance. Jonny Lindgren finished third for the Cardinals in 17:19.

St. Francis’ top runner was Dustin Ternus, who finished 24th in 19:25.

Riley Rigs-Ramage was 40th for St. Edward in 20:35.

Justin Escamilla led David City in 51st with a time of 21:03, and Caleb Preister was Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family’s best runner in 59th (21:28).
