COLUMBUS — Kiara Ziemba is a woman of many talents.
The mother of four graduated from cosmetology school 14 years ago, but didn’t stick to just styling hair.
For a decade she also served as a volunteer emergency medical technician in Genoa before moving to Columbus four years ago.
Two more years passed while Ziemba worked as a stylist at Salon.cek before she decided it was time to head out on her own.
Ziemba opened Queen Bee Salon last week in downtown Columbus.
“Owning my own salon one day has always been my dream,” Ziemba said. “Years ago I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t give up. I promised myself I was going to do this one day.”
She purchased the 2522 13th St. location a month ago and made several changes. Walls were torn down, paint was applied and chandeliers were hung.
“At first, the building was a big mess,” Ziemba said. “But my husband and I renovated this whole place pretty quickly. We both have been around construction for a long time, so we’re used to pulling 12- to 15-hour days.”
The newly remodeled business offers all hair, waxing and shaving services for men and women. Currently, there are three staff members to pamper clients. Verenice Valadez serves as the Queen Bee barber and Suleyma Basulto specializes in men’s cuts with a twist.
“As of this May, I have officially been a cosmetologist for three years,” Basulto said. “I would say my favorite thing to do is to create designs in men’s hair. Stars and diamonds are what most men ask for.”
Ziemba said she is looking to hire several more hair stylists, as well as a nail technician, esthetician and possibly a massage therapist.
But she has a few prerequisites.
“I will not hire anyone who doesn’t love hair as much as I do,” Ziemba said. “If that passion isn’t here and you don’t have years of experience, I won’t let them in.”
The passion Ziemba describes is reflected in the salon's name.
“I wanted to call this place Queen Bee because that’s how I want people to leave here feeling,” Ziemba said. “I want them to look and feel their best, like royalty.”
Queen Bee Salon is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The business can be reached at 402-606-4402.
