COLUMBUS — When Mary Engel answers a customer call on her cellphone, it’s either for clipping or flipping.

The clipping isn’t anything new.

She’s been a nail technician for nearly two decades and her business, Nails by Mary, has been in downtown Columbus for the past 11 years.

That’s where she got interested in the flipping while listening to clients talk about the used furniture store that used to be located across the street.

“I always heard how they were sad that the used store left a couple of years ago,” she said of Ron’s Furniture, which closed in 2015. “It’s always been in my head.”

When the opportunity to open a similar business arose, she immediately signed on.

Engel is manager of Flippin Furniture and More, which opened Monday next door to her nail salon.

She spent the past month helping set up the business at the corner of 25th Avenue and 13th Street that specializes mainly in gently used household furniture purchased at estate sales.

“It’s been a fun, fun journey,” said Engel, who is joined at the downtown store by part-time sales representative Paige Sohl.

The business, she said, offers something for everybody, from dining room and bedroom sets, hutches and curio cabinets to smaller decor items, knickknacks, antiques and collectibles. A customer recently picked up an entire lot of Elvis Presley-related items at the store.

Engel said the used items, which the business buys individually or by purchasing entire households, are offered at affordable prices.

Flippin Furniture and More also offers new mattresses, bed frames and box springs in addition to what comes in used.

Engel, who is also in charge of the store’s interior decorating to create that “homey” feel, said the inventory is constantly changing so there’s always something different to check out.

“You just never know what you’re going to get,” she said.

So far, Engel said, she’s received nothing but positive feedback from local shoppers happy to see another used furniture store in town.

“They’re excited,” she said. “Everybody is really excited about it.”

Flippin Furniture and More, located at 2502 13th St., is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The business is closed on Sundays, but Engel said that could change if there’s customer demand.

“Depending on business and how well it picks up, we may open on half a day Sunday,” she said.
