PD investigating local robbery

COLUMBUS — Columbus Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred Wednesday afternoon at a local business.

According to Capt. Todd Thalken, a woman walked into Avenue Bar, 1061 26th Ave., around 1:45 p.m. and displayed a handgun before taking money from the cash register.

The suspect left the business with an undisclosed amount of money.

Thalken said an employee and one or two customers were inside the bar at the time of the robbery. Nobody was injured.

Additional details have not been released.

Aquatic center closed Sunday

COLUMBUS — Columbus Aquatic Center will be closed Sunday so staff can participate in Columbus Days.

The aquatic center will reopen Monday for regular hours.

Square-dancing at local VFW

COLUMBUS -- Harold’s Squares Square Dance Club of Columbus will have its dance from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday at the VFW Hall.

The caller for the dance will be Sue Dellere from Salina, Kansas. Brownie sundaes will be served after the dance. Spectators are always welcome to stop by and see what square-dancing is all about. No lessons preceding the dance.

Area women invited to luncheon

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Christian Women’s Connection invites all area women to attend a luncheon at noon Wednesday at the Columbus Community Center, 3111 19th St.

Patrick Clark will talk about the local FCA, and the group will celebrate the beginning of Husker football season, so wear red. Music will be provided by Columbus resident Grace Christensen. This is a fundraiser for Stonecroft Ministries. Special guest speaker will be Dolly Snitselaar of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Nursing class at Central CC

COLUMBUS -- Registration is open for a nursing assistant class that will be held Wednesday through Sept. 22 at Central Community College-Columbus.

Students must attend a mandatory orientation session, but because the curriculum is offered in an individualized format, they’ll be able to attend class during the hours most convenient to them. The lab will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The class is limited to the first 15 individuals who register. The cost is $395, which includes in-state tuition, fees and books.
