Viaduct work creates detour

COLUMBUS -- Because of the Third Avenue viaduct construction, for about three months starting Friday the traffic pattern on Third Avenue from Eighth to 10th streets will be revised as follows:

Southbound traffic will be one way south on Third Avenue, and northbound traffic will be one way north on Second Avenue, then west on 10th Street back to Third Avenue. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution in the area.

Senior center holding fundraiser

SCHUYLER -- The Colfax County Senior Center, 12th and A streets in Schuyler, will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday.

The center will be serving sloppy Joes and roast beef sandwiches along with a variety of rolls, bars and pies. All proceeds will be used to defray the cost of the new heating and air conditioning system at the center.

Meeting focuses on local trails

COLUMBUS -- Those interested in trails for biking and walking are invited to attend the Columbus Area Recreational Trails meeting (CART) at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at Dusters in the upstairs conference room.

The topic will be fund allocations for a new trail.

Forklift course offered at CCC

COLUMBUS -- A forklift certification training course will be offered 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12 in the West Education Center, Room 179, at Central Community College-Columbus.

The class meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration for powered industrial trucks. It will cover prestart inspections, safety procedures, handling and transporting hazardous materials and federal regulations. Participants also will gain driving experience by using the college’s forklift before taking a driving test.

Class size is limited, so preregistration is required by Tuesday to reserve a space. The cost is $70. Students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license.

Fundraiser at floral shop

COLUMBUS -- Accent Floral and Galleria, 3413 21st St., will have an open house and fundraiser from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 9.

Donations will be accepted to support Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and missionary Janine Nickol, who is currently serving in Australia.

Accent Floral is located in Westgate Center west of Fort Western.

Program on local business

COLUMBUS -- The September meeting of the Platte County Historical Society will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 10 in the west building meeting room of the museum, 2916 16th St.

Cyndi Jarecke will present a program on the Anderson family and Anderson Floral. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free for PCHS members, and $3 for nonmembers.
