Grief Share starting series

COLUMBUS -- The Grief Share grief recovery support group will begin meeting Thursday at Word of Life Church, 3701 23rd St.

Sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday for 13 weeks, ending Dec. 14. Grief Share helps those who have lost a loved one through the healing process.

Guest speaker at luncheon

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Christian Women’s Connection will hold a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at The Sanctuary at 1C Church, 30th Avenue and 22nd Street.

Men and students are also invited to attend and hear guest speaker Sylvana Airan share her experiences from growing up in Pakistan. Now an American citizen, Airan works at UNL and holds the Nebraska women’s title for table tennis. She will also have artifacts from Pakistan.

Cost of the event is $10, with reservations due by Sunday.

Big Pals program holding picnic

COLUMBUS -- Big Pals-Little Pals will hold a fall picnic for all members of the organization from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Pawnee Park East shelter.

This event is supported by donations from an ADM grant and the Big Pals-Little Pals Board of Directors. Big Pals-Little Pals is a mentoring organization that matches adult volunteers with children ages 6-19 from single-parent homes to provide them with an adult friend and role model.

Benefit planned for Swierczek

COLUMBUS -- A benefit for Chad Swierczek will be held 4-10 p.m. Sept. 30 at the St. Anthony Social Hall, 1719 Sixth St.

The event will include silent and live auctions, live music, a freewill donation meal and alcohol tickets will be available. Swierczek was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) two years ago, and now struggles to use his arms and legs. Proceeds from the benefit are earmarked to purchase a handicapped-accessible van.

Fundraiser set for CHS band

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus High School band will hold a fundraiser from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 27 at Dairy Queen, 665 33rd Ave.

Ten percent of all sales will be donated to the CHS band.
