A 21-year-old Columbus man was killed Thursday afternoon when his vehicle rolled on a Colfax County road.

According to the Colfax County Attorney’s Office, Cody Black was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle accident around 2:42 p.m.

Witnesses said Black was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer east on Road L when he lost control of the vehicle just inside the Colfax County line between roads 1 and 2. Black was ejected from the vehicle when it rolled down an embankment.

A passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Rico Chavez, was transported to Columbus Community Hospital where he was treated and released.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in the accident, according to the attorney’s office. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Fire and Rescue initially responded to the accident around 2 p.m. Thursday and were later joined by personnel from the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol and Schuyler Fire Department.

The accident remains under investigation.
