COLUMBUS – A 39-year-old Columbus man is suspected of domestic assault after reportedly chasing a woman while appearing to be choking her in a parking lot of an apartment complex Sunday on the northwest edge of Columbus.

Columbus Police arrested Felipe Erremayor Nabalon for strangulation and third-degree domestic assault in connection with the incident in which a witness reported seeing the suspect chase his girlfriend across a 53rd Avenue parking lot.

Nabalon is scheduled for a felony first appearance hearing March 12 in Platte County Court. A personal recognizance bond of $10,000 has been set for the defendant, who has not been formally charged in the case.

The defendant was ordered not to go within five blocks of the apartment the couple shared.

Police said that when officers arrived Nabalon was exiting the couple’s apartment, and that he  admitted arguing with his girlfriend, but denied being involved in a physical altercation and couldn’t tell officers where the woman had gone.

When authorities contacted the woman, according to Officer Santiago Velaquez’s arrest statement, she reported being assaulted and had visible injuries to her face, scratch and red marks under both eyes and red marks on her throat.

The woman, who has been in a dating relationship with the suspect for two years, told authorities Nabalon had assaulted her before but she had never reported it to police.
