COLUMBUS -- An apartment in a two-story brick building on 47th Avenue sustained extensive heat and smoke damage Wednesday during a fire that sent one woman to the hospital.

Columbus Rescue transported the tenant of one of the eight apartments in the building in the 2600 block of 47th Avenue to Columbus Community Hospital, where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

No other information on the woman was available Thursday.

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the 9:35 a.m. blaze.

Columbus Fire Chief Dean Hefti said 11 firefighters, one pumper truck and one ambulance responded to the scene.

Firefighters evacuated the other apartments in the building as a precautionary measure, and allowed residents to return to their homes around noon, Hefti said.

There were no injuries among the firefighters at the scene.
