Columbus Community Hospital's child care facility is scheduled to open in August.

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Community Hospital Child Care Center, scheduled to open later this summer, is offering spots to the public.

The 13,000-square-foot facility will be owned and operated by Columbus Community Hospital. Located on the northeast corner of the hospital’s campus, the facility will provide more child care options in a community that is experiencing a shortage in that area.

Creating more child care options was at or near the top of the list of workplace concerns, according to surveys of more than 600 hospital staff members.

“The value of the CCH Child Care Center is two-fold: First, by listening to our employees’ concerns and adding the child care benefit, we have demonstrated they are a valued part of our organization. Second, we hope to help reduce the vast need for additional child care openings around the community,” CCH President and CEO Mike Hansen said in an email.

He also said the center will be a recruitment tool.

“The option of offering child care will also be a benefit as we continue to recruit new health care providers for our community. Because the child care facility will be a drop-in/drop-off service located next to the hospital, employees will have the opportunity to take their children to a facility that is close to their employment and receive quality daycare services with extended hours, without the need to sign a contract,” Hansen said.

The state-licensed center, which can serve approximately 105 children, is open to hospital employees first. Space is also available to the public. Enrollment information and questions about services provided at the center can be directed to Melinda Long, CCH Child Care Center director, at or 402-562-3289.

The center is expected to open Aug. 14. Hours will be 5 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with infant, toddler, preschool and school-age care available. The pre-kindergarten program will be 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. A preschool program will be offered with a Monday/Wednesday/Friday class or Tuesday/Thursday class.
