Donald L. Cumming was born at the family home in Nance County to Robert J. and Alice (Curry) Cumming on Aug. 20, 1921. Don attended elementary country school in Nance County until fourth grade and then attended District 68 West Hill in Platte County. Don graduated from St. Edward High School in 1938 and continued his education at the Grand Island School of Business.

Don, a veteran of World War II, entered the United States Army on Sept. 22, 1942. He was awarded medals as an M1 Rifle Sharpshooter and for American Theater Service, Victory and Good Conduct. He attained the rank of staff sergeant before being honorably discharged on Feb. 3, 1946.

After returning home, Don was united in marriage on June 4, 1947, to Clara Marie Zimmerman at St. Edward Catholic Church. The couple moved to a farm east of St. Edward where Don farmed and fed cattle, a lifetime career that was more passion for him than it was work.

Don was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, American Legion Crosier Post 226 of St. Edward and the former Platte County Feeders Association. Don loved going to cattle sales and held buyer No. 70 at the Columbus Sales Pavilion. Don’s father had the same buyer ticket, and it has since been passed down to his sons, Jerry and Rex.

Don loved visiting with people, dancing and listening to big band and swing music with his wife Clara. And he enjoyed playing pitch and other card games.

Don is survived by five children Karen (Michael) Kane of Silver Spring, Maryland, Connie (Greg) Flaherty of Shawnee, Kansas, Jerry Cumming of Genoa, Rex Cumming of Genoa and Lisa (Mike) Marsh of Omaha; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother Gene Cumming of St. Edward; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Clara in 2014.
