COLUMBUS — Mary Bierman, 80, of Columbus, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, at her home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 562 17th Ave., in Columbus. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery in Columbus. A CDA rosary will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and a vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
Mary Bierman was born June 24, 1937, in Humphrey to William and Erna (Thomas) Steiner. She grew up in Humphrey and graduated from Humphrey St. Francis High School in 1955. Mary moved to Columbus where she worked as a secretary for Ewert Motors and later Behlen Mfg. On June 28, 1958, Mary was united in marriage to Gene Bierman at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. They started their family in 1959. Mary was a homemaker all of her life. In 1963, Mary and Gene co-founded BD Construction where she was responsible for the accounting for the business. In 2002, at the age of 65, she and Gene along with the family started a new company, Bierman Contracting. She worked there until her passing.
What was most important to her was her Catholic faith and family. Mary would begin every morning with the rosary. She passed down those values to her children and grandchildren. She cherished her family time. She enjoyed family vacations, camping and weekends at the cabin. Later in life, Mary and Gene finished seeing 49 of the 50 states as they drove throughout the country. Mary loved visiting casinos, scrapbooking, genealogy, playing cards, reading and doing puzzles. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Theresa Sodality, CDA and perpetual adoration since 1968. Mary was a strong believer in Catholic education.
She is survived by her husband Gene Bierman of Columbus, son Doug Scott (Evelyn) Bierman of Kearney, daughter Marie (Jim) Hoppenstedt of Kearney, son Jerry (Kathy) Bierman of Columbus, daughter Karen (Pat) Merrill of Columbus, daughter Laura (Dean) Engquist of Columbus, son John (Kamie) Bierman of Columbus, daughter Donna (Mark) Love of Norfolk, son Mark (Sue) Bierman of Columbus, son Steve Bierman of Columbus, son Tony (Kristin) Bierman of Columbus, 35 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, brother Dennis “Bud” Steiner of Columbus, brother Joe (Mary Ann) Steiner of Fremont, sister Rose Wahlgren of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Erna Steiner, infant child Angel, grandson Nathan Corder, great-granddaughter Ellinor Johnson, seven sisters and two brothers.
