Augustin

COLUMBUS — Norris Augustin, 82, of Columbus, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at Columbus Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Federated Church in Columbus with the Rev. Kenneth Leischner, Rev. Dr. Annika Lister Stroope and Pastor Edward Yang participating in the service. Private family interment will be at a later date. There will be no visitation.

Norris “Norry” C. Augustin was born April 8, 1935, at Mary Lanning Hospital, Hastings, to L.A. “Larry” and Janet (Pulver) Augustin of Kenesaw. This was the “dirty thirties” era, and the family stories always included that with his birth and the first spring rains, came the swirling thick red dust covering windows everywhere.

Norry was involved with education most of his life. He entered grade school in Cozad, but moved to Blue Hill during his sixth-grade year. He remained there, involved with many activities, and graduated in 1953. That fall Norry entered Kearney State Teachers College, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education degree while participating in extensive service and social campus organizations. After his 1957 graduation, he taught seven years of instrumental and choral music in the Campbell and Blue Hill districts.

On Aug. 24, 1958, following a five-year courtship involving two independent natures, Norry married Lee Rippen at the Methodist Church in Gothenburg. The following year he became a member of the Nebraska National Guard with its basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and summer camps until 1965 at Camp Ripley, Minnesota. During those years, he became a loving father to daughter Jaci and son Jon.

Having acquired a master's degree at Kearney in 1962, Norry welcomed the Columbus High School’s counseling position and so began that five-year CHS opportunity in 1965. During that time, son Jay was born. With the development of Platte College came the possibilities of working with older students, and so from 1970–1997, he served first as academic counselor and then registrar on the Columbus campus.

In his retirement, Norry continued to enjoy his lifelong passions of gardening, bird-watching, music and antiquing. He and Lee established a 30-year antique business traveling extensively in the Midwest and meeting fascinating people as they displayed their wares.

Norry is survived by his wife Lee Augustin of Columbus; daughter Jaci (Marissa Heuer) Augustin of Ceresco; daughter Kiyvon Augustin of Crofton; and grandchildren Jesse, Tommy, Cory and Jena.

Norry was preceded in death by his parents Larry and Jan Augustin; sons Jay and Jon Augustin; and uncle Clive Pulver.
