Alarcon passes CPA exam
Fernando Alarcon recently passed all four parts of the certified public accountant (CPA) exam.
Alarcon has been working for Pekny & Associates, CPAs PC for seven years in the Schuyler office as a staff accountant, and is now a licensed CPA in the state of Nebraska. He is an asset to the business, helping both English- and Spanish-speaking clients.
Pekny & Associates, CPAs PC offers computerized recordkeeping, income tax preparation for individuals, partnerships and corporations, as well as financial statements and auditing services.

Mundil attends state workshop
KEARNEY — Colfax County Clerk Rita Mundil attended a 2 1/2-day conference for Nebraska county officials held Dec. 13-15 in Kearney.
The annual conference, attended by approximately 800 county officials and employees, is part of a continuing education and leadership series sponsored by the Nebraska Association of County Officials.
The conference updated county officials on recent changes in state laws and provided extensive training on the responsibilities of their respective offices.
St. Benedict hosting events
The public is invited to St. Benedict Center to view Nativity scenes from around the world, including the Holy Land, Africa, Asia, South America, North America and Europe. The Nativity display will run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 2–5. There is no admission fee.
God Calls! A Discernment Retreat for Women is scheduled for Jan. 19-21. Teresa Monaghen, Sr. Inviolata Mukhaabi, Fr. Thomas Leitner and their team of consecrated and lay women will help attendees draw closer to God and participants will be introduced to life-giving spiritual tools. Scholarships are available.
Men’s Retreat: Spiritual Exercises for Discipleship is scheduled for Jan. 26-28. This weekend for men will introduce attendees to many practical tools for living as Jesus’ disciples. Br. August Schaefer, Deacon Duane Karmazin, Fr. Thomas Leitner and Teresa Monaghen will present various aspects of discernment. The schedule will include brief conferences, silence, Mass, Confession, fellowship, and spiritual direction. It's open to all ages and scholarships are available.
Walking the Lenten Journey with Scripture and Benedictine Values is a one-day retreat scheduled for Feb. 3 with Brother Tobias Dammert. This day will include shared lectio divina with selected Scripture passages, time for silent reflection and exploration of Benedictine values regarding the observance of Lent, God’s mercy, the community of brothers and sisters, silence and celebration. Program fee is $30. Lunch is available at the center for $10.50.
