September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country (and in your town) remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Sign-Up Month, a national observance that was launched in 1987 to ensure every child obtains a library card and uses it. Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that.
Library cards are free to those living in the library's service area. Schuyler Public Library requires some form of identification with current address or the signature of a guardian.
This year, the crime-fighting DC superheroes the Teen Titans are teaming up with the American Library Association to promote the value of a library card. As honorary chairs, DC’s Teen Titans are reminding parents and students that signing up for a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning. The Teen Titans are a young group of crime fighters who keep the world safe from the clutches of evil.
From Starfire’s green energy beams and power of flight to Raven’s telekinetic and psychokinetic abilities, the Teen Titans have the power, courage and teamwork to rise to any challenges thrown their way.
Entering a public library is like walking through a magical doorway to the world. Whatever you want to do, wherever you want to go, whomever you want to be, it is all there, waiting for you at the public library. Between the covers of a book lie worlds you’ve only dreamed of, or maybe worlds you never imagined. The public library offers its patrons the magical power to be transformed and transported just by the simple action of opening a book.
During September, Schuyler Public Library is asking patrons to stop in and fill out one of our graphic sheets that state: “My Library Super Power Is ... .” These graphics will be displayed at the library throughout the month. Plus, people who register for new cards or use their cards in September will be eligible for prizes at the end of the month.
Only one month is designated as Library Card Sign-Up Month, but there are 12 months and endless reasons to use it. See you at your library.
