CONCORD — Vandelyn D. Hanson, 89, of Concord, entered into rest Friday, March 3, 2017, in Wayne.
A Christian service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord. Pallbearers are Kiel Lawrence, Ross Lawrence, Garret Hanson, Jordan Hanson, Nate Buffum, Kyle O’Donnell and Will Martin. Interment will be in Concord Cemetery in Concord. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at the church with family present.
Vandelyn Doris Cordelia Johnson Hanson was born March 16, 1927, in rural Cedar County to Oscar W. and Elvira (Magnuson) Johnson. She was raised north of Dixon and graduated from Dixon High School in 1944. She attended Wayne Normal School for her teaching certificate. She taught in Pleasant Valley School District 39 and Tip Top School. Vandelyn married W.E. “Bud” Hanson on May 22, 1948, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord, where she was also baptized and confirmed. They farmed in Wayne and Dixon counties while raising six children. Vandelyn worked outside the home at various jobs in Wayne and Laurel, and owned and operated the grocery store in Concord. She was a lifelong member of Concordia Lutheran Church. Vandelyn was active through the years in ladies church groups, WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) and the Merry Homemakers Club.
Vandelyn is survived by her children, Al (Audrey) Hanson of Alliance, Paulette (Jim) Stauffer of Tecumseh, Warren (Danita) Hanson of Concord, Doreen (Marc) Lawrence of Lincoln and Jill (Randy) Ruskamp of Schuyler; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hanson of Jacksonville, Florida; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Blanche Backstrom of Laurel.
Vandelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, “Bud” in 1997; son, Wendell; infant daughter, Betty; and son-in-law, Jim Martin.
Memorials may be directed to the Hanson family for later designation.
