During the summer months I hear from plenty of people who tell me that with all of the time they spend outside gardening, maintaining their lawns or involved in family activities, they don’t have time to do much reading.

Now that fall has arrived and gardens are producing less, grass is slower to grow and the kids are back in school, I expect that people will begin to do more reading.

Over the last few months we have added plenty of new books for your enjoyment. Some of our most recent additions include: “The Old Farmer’s Almanac, 2016,” “The Pine Tar Game: The Kansas City Royals, the New York Yankees, and Baseball’s Most Absurd and Entertaining Controversy,” “Here’s Johnny!” by Ed McMahon, “Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia” and “I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This!” by Bob Newhart.

Besides all of the great books, audios and magazines that we have in-house for your selection, we provide you with access to many, many digital e-books and audio books. In order to borrow these items and load them onto your own digital device go to http://nebraska.lib.overdrive.com.

If you haven’t followed this in years past, the Big Library Read is coming back in October. Here’s how it works: OverDrive, our supplier of downloadable e-books and audiobooks has partnered with their publishing partners to make two popular e-books available to libraries for lending. During the two-week program, the Big Library Read titles will be available to borrow without a waiting list. All you need is your library card. The titles selected this time around are the young adult titles “The Door In the Hedge” by Robin McKinley and “In the Shadow of Blackbirds” by Cat Winters. This global event will run Oct. 7-21, enabling readers from around the world to enjoy the same e-book titles at the same time. Samples of these books are available at this time at http://partners.overdrive.com/big-library-read/.

If shorter reads are more to your liking, you can go to our website at http://libraries.ne.gov/schuyler/, select the Zinio link, follow the instructions, and have access to 50 great magazines. When you download these magazines, you never have to return them!

Fall is a great time to slow down and be entertained by a good book.
