October is upon us and that marks the beginning of the long stretch of holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and, of course, New Year’s. This most exciting time of the year can also be the busiest with activities scheduled almost every night; especially for school-age children. As busy as everyone will be, it is important to take some time to relax and catch your breath.
I can’t think of any better way to relax than a visit to your library. We have everything you need to recharge after a busy day/week. Snuggle up in a comfortable chair and surf the Internet using our free Wi-Fi. That can mean playing a video game, reading a newspaper or book, or just catching up with friends and family on Facebook. It’s easy with our wireless Internet connection.
If you want to bring the young ones along you’ll want to visit the children’s library and check out our selection of new toys, games and costumes. If your child dreams of being a fireman, park ranger, construction worker, police officer or even a hairdresser, we can make that happen with some clothes, hats and imagination.
We have also added new toys that can help your child experiment with their engineering and construction interests. Build a house or Ferris wheel, or build a car or airplane, design a truck or windmill. We have the toys/tools for your child to practice hands-on skills and learn while having fun.
Your library also added new board games for children of all ages. We have Hi Ho! CherryO; Honey Comb; Chutes and Ladders; Candy Land; and Connect 4. And for those who prefer “old-school” games, we also have chess and checkers. Bring a friend and get a game going.
And of course we have kid-friendly computers in the children’s library for use by our very young patrons. We have two desktop AWE computers and one AWE tablet, and all three are loaded with fun and educational software. They can even take their own photo and color it! Bring them on in and let them go! The only thing they are limited by is their imagination!
The Nebraska Library Association will be holding its annual conference in Lincoln on Oct. 14-16. Schuyler Public Library will be closed Thursday, Oct. 15, so staff members can attend. The conference is always a good opportunity to discuss challenges and exchange ideas with fellow librarians from across the state.
Schuyler Public Library will have its Halloween Movie Night and Party on Thursday, Oct. 22, beginning at 5 p.m. There will be a movie, popcorn and special treats for those in costume. Circle the date on your calendar so you don’t forget.
Have a great week and we’ll see you at the library!
