The Schuyler Central High School wrestling team sent nine grapplers to the NSAA State Wrestling Championships last weekend at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Jesus Maganda returned home with a third-place finish in the 220-pound weight class.

The Warriors finished in 20th place in the 45-team Class B field with 31 points. Omaha Skutt won its 20th team title in the past 21 years, scoring 146 points. Grand Island Northwest took second place with 119 points ahead of Lexington with 99 points. Hastings and Sidney tied for fourth at 95 points each.

Even though the Warriors had only one medalist, head coach Jeremy Hlavac stated that his athletes enjoyed a successful tournament. “I am very pleased with the efforts that our wrestlers had on making it to the state meet," he said. "Jesus had a great tournament with his third-place finish.”

Maganda went 4-1 in his five matches in the 220-pound weight class to raise his season record to an impressive 38-4 record.

In his opening match, he won by fall 49 seconds into the fray, pinning John Kerwood from Fairbury.

In the quarter-final match he scored a major decision of 14-5 over Jordan Kavulak from Seward. In the semi-final eventual champion Jack Sutton from Wahoo handed Maganda his only loss of the weekend by the narrowest of decisions at 3-2. He rebounded in the consolation semis with a 3-1 decision over Jon Merten from Boone Central/Newman Grove. Maganda then earned his appearance on the medal stand when he scored a 7-6 decision over Kaleb Taylor from McCook in the 3rd-place match.

A couple other SCHS wrestlers earned two victories apiece to earn points for the Warriors.

“Miguel Roman and Rosel Diaz both went 2-2 and made it to the third-round wrestle-backs. Our other wrestlers that won matches were Isaac Hernandez and Caleb Novak. Both of those guys are seniors so it was a great way to finish out the individual meet with a win down in Omaha,” commented Hlavac. “Angel Rojo, our other senior, suffered an injury during his last match and lost.”

Hlavac knows that the younger wrestlers benefited greatly from making the trip to Omaha.

“Caden Yrkoski, Michael Hernandez, and Denilson Martinez all gathered useful experience being down at the state meet and I expect big things from these three next season and at the state dual meet next weekend," Hlavac said.

For the second straight year, the Warriors will compete in the NSAA Wrestling Dual Championships at the Health and Sports Center on the University of Nebraska-Kearney campus in Kearney.

There are eight teams competing in each class. In Class B the eight teams seeded from first through eighth are: 1. Blair, 2. Omaha Skutt Catholic, 3. Grand Island Northwest, 4. Plattsmouth, 5. Hastings, 6. Sidney, 7. Wahoo, and 8. Schuyler Central.

“The best part about this coming weekend is that all of these guys will get one more week of practice and another chance to compete," Hlavac said. "I feel that our team is built for the duals as we have great depth and put a quality wrestler on the mat at each weight class. I have pushed the importance of the dual state meet and I feel that SCHS is ready to take on the best teams at this competition.”
