KEARNEY -- The Schuyler Central High School wrestling team placed sixth at the 2018 NSAA State Dual Wrestling Tournament held on the UNK campus in Kearney this past Saturday.

Eight teams from each class were invited to participate in the event based on scoring at their respective district tournaments.

Schuyler drew the eighth-seed in Class B and squared off against top-seeded Blair in the opening round. The Warriors battled the Bears to the very end. The teams entered the decisive match tied at 36-all. The Bears won that match 3-0 and the dual 39-36.

Schuyler blew out Plattsmouth 50-24 in the consolation semifinal, but were no match for Wahoo in the fifth-place match, losing 51-21.

The Warriors got an early 20-6 lead against the Blue Devils, but but couldn’t put the match away until a run of three straight pins. Plattsmouth had cut into Schuyler’s lead, making it 26-18 with five matches to go, but the Warrior’s upper weights got the job done to seal the victory.

Rosel Diaz (195 pounds), Jesus Maganda (220 pounds) and Angel Rojo (285 pounds) all pinned their opponents to help Schuyler pull away.

Wahoo won the first six matches, including four falls, against the Warriors to take a 30-0 lead. It cruised from there.
