OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — After starting the season 19-2, Central Community College finally had a letdown.
The third-ranked Raiders lost three matches last week after going 2-2 on Friday and Saturday at the Johnson County Volleyball Challenge while playing without their leading attacker Maeghan Pieper.
Central also lost at home Wednesday to NJCAA Division I, No. 4 Iowa Western.
The Raiders started the tournament Friday with a pair of four-set wins, but dropped both their matches on Saturday. Central beat Des Moines Area Community College (16-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-23) and No. 12 Kirkwood Community College (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20) and lost to No. 8 Cowley Community College (21-25, 25-15, 24-26, 26-23, 15-9) and Johnson County Community College (25-22, 25-17, 26-28, 25-17).
Amber Anderson stepped up in Pieper’s absence, recording 58 kills over the four matches, including 21 against Kirkwood.
Jacie Laetsch added 46 kills and 60 digs and Chainey Tompkin had 35 kills and a team-best 18 total blocks.
Central plays Wednesday at Southeast Community College in Beatrice.
